Received first literary award in 1st grade for a "research" paper on the "Celebration of Christmas Around the World." Yes, it was a 15 page research paper that included bibliography, citations, footnotes and end notes. And yes it was "1st Grade".
This was followed up by her second award for a short film called, "The Care and Upkeep of Your Pets". This was in 3rd Grade.
The awards kept coming. But along with them came acting and singing. Iolande is an all around performer who is happy in front of or behind the camera. She has worked as a spokes model for GMAC Mastercard on the Penn and Teller College Tour, she has performed in the opera AIDA and the timeless musical HAIR!
Her talents are not to be had in just one language, she performed in Bodas de Sangre a play entirely in Spanish.
In 1983 she worked as a talent coordinator and usher for the US Festival and spent time with such notables as David Bowie, Van Halen, Motley Crue and The Clash. This was followed up by being selected to be in the opera AIDA for the Ontario Playhouse.
She finished high school and junior college the same year (she'd attended both out of boredom) and also business school receiving her certificate in retail marketing and merchandising. She was also inducted into the Spanish Honor Society for which she received a trip to Mexico City and the Yucatan, where the blockbuster, "Against All Odds" was filmed.
She finished out her first round of college earning a degrees in journalism and government. This would come in handy later as she worked on two campaigns for Walter Mondale and on grassroots projects for voting.
Later she became a specialty model in 1992. She enjoyed walking catwalks for high end retailers Emporium Capwell and Macy's amongst her other performance duties. While modeling she was still working the stage and performed as "Susanne", a "Supreme" and "Abe Lincoln" in the musical HAIR! ('92). It was the top grossing performance for its two week run, grossing over $35,000 for the American River Theatre.
She followed this up with working as a spokes model in 1993 (GMAC Mastercard Presents Penn and Teller). From 1993-95 she was again a talent usher and liaison working concerts for talents such as Boys 2 Men, R Kelly, Garth Brooks, Reba McIntyre, the late Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Mettalica and Bette Midler.
Not one to shy away from a challenge, Iolande left the "spotlight" for a different sort of media role. Using her background for journalism and government she volunteered for then took on the role of executive secretary to the former NAACP president, Dr. Smith and barely missed an office bombing by minutes as she was usually the last to leave and lock up. After this she began working as the office manager and campaign headquarter liaison for the Willie Brown Gubernatorial race.
Iolande returned to writing in 2007 when she began her own by-line for a popular Internet magazine called "Large and In Charge" (www.largeincharge.com). She won an award for her articles on Size Acceptance Internationally. She also published her first book under the pen name, Ande, the Office Venus, "The Temporary Employee's Handbook: A Guide to Success" (Oubliette Publishing,) in 2008 followed up by "The Successful Job Seeker" (www.wordclay.com) in 2011.
While writing for LIC magazine she also became one of the co-hosts for the publication's weekly podcast. She then helped another of the co-hosts develop their own weekly broadcast called, Now vs. Then (www.4aces.com) which was a talk show that hosted musical and film artists from the past and today. Guests included Stacy Latislaw and Gloria Hendry, from the James Bond film "Live and Let Die."
Return to her Roots
In 2010, Iolande launched her own podcast, "Tips and Tactics" which broadcasted weekly Monday mornings 6AM EST from her station "IVA Radio Network". After the show's success she launch her own "talk radio" hosting interview segments that helped job seekers and people in career transition, small businesses and non-profits with business start up and finances.
Her shows also offered a platform for writers, film and theatre professionals and musical artists to promote their work internationally. Within 6 months of launch the shows had over 54K listeners and 30+ thousand downloads of the archives. In 2011 she and her guests christened the year the Unofficial Year of the Entrepreneur and she began working on new platforms to help make that happen.
So in 2012, IVA Radio Network was re-branded as Dr. Ande Radio, and now hosts such shows as Dr. Ande's Writers' Radio.
Currently she's began working on producing Dr Ande's Writers' Radio, heard 9 AM Wednesdays on KUBU-LP 96.5 FM in Sacramento, CA. She is also producing In The Author's Corner TV which will broadcast via her IPTV Webcast channel and on Comcast Channel 18 in Northern California. She is also in talks to produce two episodic shows on the history and haunts of California.
